One can’t help thinking that buying a spacious family home is the be-all and end-all of family needs. However this does not answer the eternal question of do we buy small to keep our running costs down, or do we go large and spread out, thus enjoying some personal space, come what may with maintenance needs . . . . My family decided on the latter option some years ago and barring one or two little incidents, we have never regretted having our very attractive house, well proportioned and designed for family life. We have a main family bathroom and an ensuite to the master bedroom. We also have a downstairs WC & cloakroom. To service these with adequate hot water we use a gas fired boiler and this saves the heated water to the tank in the airing cupboard and when switched on, to the 13 radiators and 2 heated towel rails. In all the twenty plus years of living here, I have only had very minor maintenance work on the boiler and radiators. I try and keep on top of things that look as though they are giving way – always the best policy in this house, nip problems in the bud before they explode into major catastrophes!
