There comes a time when we have to look at the utilities coming into our properties. For the modern home owner this isn’t such an onerous task. By virtue of the planning rules surrounding all developments, the utilities are all planned and shown on all the plans and drawings. Everything has to be approved as viable, deliverable and safe. This country is sometimes thought of as a ‘nanny’ state, i.e. rather too concerned with rules and regulations. However, this has made us probably one of the safest countries in which to live. Once the power, be it gas, electricity, or water, has come to our property the responsibility is with us to ensure the pipework, cabling, plumbing etc is not disturbed, illegally tapped into, in anyway diverted or any any way interferred with. Any work that needs doing in or immediately outside the house on these utilities must be carried out by the appropriately qualified folk. There have been many deaths where amateurs have interferred with gas and electric supplies – usually tapping in for illegal gain. Never worth it.
