I was having afternoon tea with a chum last week when she had a panic phone call from her daughter – I could hear the wailed “Mum, I’ve got a problem” from the other side of the garden. She discovered water coming through the ceiling light fitting in the back hallway. Panic stricken, she shut everyone outside and went in to find the source. Turned out to be their hot water expansion tank had blown and was now emptying its many litres of water underneath, through the carpeted airing cupboard and down through the ceiling below. She had the prescence of mind to turn off what looked like an operating handle. Then she set about looking for an emergency plumber. Not easy on the day before the day she was due to go on a cruise. I dashed over with the Mum and between us we got the soaking bit of carpet out – draping it over a handy pile of bricks and then we put newspaper and towels down to dry the cupboard floor. Never before have I been so thrilled to see an emergency plumber before!
